True Freshman WR Standing Out for Gators
True freshman wide receiver Freddie Swain has been impressing his coaches and teammates this spring.
Antonio Callaway, Florida’s leading returning receiver, is out indefinitely, and that creates the opportunity for others to step up this spring. With so many new faces at the skill-position spots, don’t be surprised if several guys make a splash this spring.
True freshman Freddie Swain has stood out thus far. In the media viewing portion of practice, he certainly looks comfortable. Swain was a big-play threat in high school at Citra (Fla.) North Marion. He battled back from a midseason broken collarbone in 2015 to compete down the stretch and in the playoffs.
His school is always loaded with talent and has produced college receivers such as Greg Carr for FSU and Latroy Pittman at Florida. Swain is better than both of those guys and has a tremendous upside. He is a natural route runner who also can be physical. Swain has excellent ball skills and possesses the ability to go get the ball even when he’s covered.
As with many first-year college players, he will need to work on his release against press coverage, but his physical style of play should translate well. That he is practicing daily against perhaps the best secondary in college football also will serve him well.
