Spurrier, Donovan comment on Foley's retirement

If nothing else, Jeremy Foley has learned to keep a secret. Just about all of his closest friends and associates were taken back by the news Monday that after 25 years as Florida’s athletic director, he is officially stepping down October 1.
If nothing else, Jeremy Foley has learned to keep a secret. Just about all of his closest friends and associates were taken back by the news Monday that after 25 years as Florida’s athletic director, he is officially stepping down October 1.

That includes the other three members of “The Big Four” who rode together with him over two-and-a-half decades of excellence in college sports: Steve Spurrier, Billy Donovan and Urban Meyer. They produced five national championships and 16 SEC trophies.

“Jeremy Foley will go down as the greatest athletic director in the school history with all those championships – three of them in football as well as all those other sports,” Spurrier told me. “And so many SEC championships – people don’t realize those SECs are really, really special and you get a ring for those, too. And you get to celebrate them as you go along.”

Foley is leaving behind a trophy case stuffed with 27 national championships in 13 sports. There is still a spot reserved for a baseball trophy, which coach Kevin O’Sullivan hopes to bring back from Omaha as a going away present.

“Baseball is the one sport he hasn’t been able to win the national championship,” said Spurrier, who was bestowed the honor of having his name added to Florida Field just a few days ago. “Maybe they can get one for him.”
