Renderings of the new Shands Bridge

The First Coast Expressway is a new multi-lane limited access toll facility currently being built between Interstate 10 (I-10) in western Duval County and State Road 21 (SR 21)/Blanding Boulevard in Clay County. Eventually, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) plans to expand the expressway from SR 21/Blanding Boulevard to I-95 in St. Johns County. This second phase will include a new multi-lane bridge over the St. Johns River that will serve as a replacement of the aging Shands Bridge. Currently in the preliminary design phase, FDOT now has renderings of what the latest crossing over the St. Johns Bridge will resemble. The new bridge appears to be a four-lane structure that includes a separated bicycle and pedestrian path, similar to what local residents had to fight for as a part of the proposed I-95/Fuller Warren Bridge expansion project in downtown Jacksonville.  Take a look at the renderings and let us know what you think about the design of the proposed Shands Bridge replacement.
