Jacksonville Landing To Transform Itself Wednesday

The Jacksonville Landing has partnered with Downtown Vision, Inc. and local urban advocacy group TransForm Jax to create a pop-up park during the First Wednesday Art Walk called the Front Porch at Art Walk. The Front Porch at Art Walk will debut on Wednesday, March 2 from 5 – 9 p.m.

The open space outside The Landing along Independent Drive will be reimagined to feature outdoor seating, live music, free games, a marketplace of local artisans and food trucks. Organizers hope to emulate an attractive front porch environment in front of The Landing aimed at welcoming visitors into The Landing’s proverbial living room.

“This is something we have never done before so we invite all to participate and come hang out and see how lively our Downtown is and can be,” says Janice Lowe, General Manager of The Landing. “We believe this event concept is the key in connectivity from Hemming Park to The Landing during First Wednesday Art."

The idea originates from a concept gaining popularity among urban planning circles called tactical urbanism. Tactical urbanism utilizes small-scale, temporary projects that are designed to quickly test out concepts aimed at encouraging a vibrant street life. By using inexpensive means to measure the curb appeal of proposed design changes in real time, potential large capital improvements will have a track record of success before being enacted.

“TransForm Jax is thrilled to work with The Jacksonville Landing to test some temporary changes to the exterior of the building that can change how people perceive this important asset,” says TransForm Jax co-founder Aaron Glick. “Once people experience this space in a new way and we understand what features are well-received, then we can build broader support to implement similar, permanent changes that help make Downtown a vibrant neighborhood with an active street life.”
