McElwain says Gators farther along than season ago

Jim McElwain comments on his quarterbacks, kicker, offensive line and who will step forward in a leadership capacity on this year's team.
McElwain is pleased with the progress players have made in his program from Year 1 to now.

“We’re just a lot farther along and a lot better football team right now in a lot of ways. We had a really good spring. It was fun to see a lot of guys grow up.”

QUARTERBACK

“Luke (Del Rio) did a heck of a job maybe solidifying (as the starter) going into fall camp a little bit. I’ll say this, Austin (Appleby) did some really good things, especially in situational work, that I think you can tell his experience may be ahead of Luke a little bit.

“We’ve got four new quarterbacks in that room who’ve got to go out and prove it.”

OFFENSIVE LINE

“Obviously we need to get (Martez Ivey) back; he’s one of the best players to come out of this state at that position in a long time and proved it a year ago.

“We’re a long ways ahead from where we were a year ago with this offensive line. Last spring we had a bartender and a pizza delivery guy who were just helping us get through practice.
