Pop-Up History: The History of Beer in Jax

Did you know the 6-pack was invented in Jacksonville? Learn about this story and more tonight, as Jax Pop Up History returns to tell the History of Beer in Jacksonville.

Several times a year, the Jacksonville Historical Society stages a “pop-up history” event. The concept of a pop-up history combines the element of mystery, surprise, and social media to educate the public about important but relatively unknown facets of Jacksonville’s history. Although the time and date of each of these pop-up events are announced well ahead of time and people are urged to sign up for it, the location is kept secret until a few days before the event takes place. Meanwhile, clues and teasers are given out gradually during the prior week via social media to our large list of followers. The actual subject of the historical event is also kept secret until the night before the program. The Times-Union usually runs a feature article on the background history of the event topic on the morning of the program.

This is a series of fun and educational events designed to bring attention to the forgotten history buried in our own back yard and make little known historical events come alive.  These events are aimed to encourage young professionals to connect with the history of Jacksonville. They also always involve drinking beer. Some of these events have drawn several hundred people.

The popular programs are hosted by historians Wayne Wood, Ennis Davis, and social media guru Mike Field. The non-profit PB&J will staff our upcoming events. Some of our previous programs have included “Bawdy Behavior -- The Naughty History of Houston Street,” “The Great Plane Crash of 1943 that Wiped Out 10 Blocks of Riverside,” and “The Mysterious History of Silvertown.”
