New Sidewalks For Philips Highway
Philips Highway, a Southside roadway traditionally known for being dangerous to pedestrians and cyclist, is in the process of getting new sidewalks and bike lanes.
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is installing about two miles of new sidewalks as part of a roadway resurfacing project along Philips Highway (US 1). The resurfacing project begins at Bowden Road and ends at Pearson Street, where it will match up with the Overland Bridge reconstruction project. Bike lanes will be added the entire length of the project. Work began on September 15th, and the $6.2 million project is anticipated for completion in summer 2015.
FDOT is adding new sidewalk, where there currently is none, from Bowden Road to Emerson Street. North of Emerson Street, there is existing sidewalk all the way to Pearson Street. In addition, throughout the project limits, FDOT is repairing existing damaged sidewalk sections, bringing curb ramps to current ADA standards, and upgrading pedestrian crossing signals to include the ‘countdown’ feature.
Duval Asphalt Products, Inc. is the contractor. Daytime lane closures are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Nighttime lane closures are expected from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday once asphalt paving begins.
Motorists should use caution when traveling through the construction site. No word on if this project is being coordinated with the Jacksonville Transportation Authority's (JTA) plans for Bus Rapid Transit along this same stretch of roadway.
