12. Lost Jacksonville
A century ago, Jacksonville was the center of a highly progressive architectural community. Over time, we have become a conservative community with little regard for the importance of architecture in our urban landscape. Here is a collection of images showcasing several significant structures that no longer exist in the downtown area. A few came down in fires; others were replaced by larger structures. Most were simply torn down and replaced with parking garages and surface lots. Hopefully, one day reminders showing what we have lost will provoke our community to work harder to save what's left.

9. Heartbreakingly Cool Footage of Downtown in 1942
Old 16mm vacation films were recently discovered at a garage sale in San Jose, CA by Tim Peddy and converted to digital courtesy of The California Pioneers of Santa Clara County. It depicts a train ride from California to Florida via New York City, ultimately arriving in Pensacola via Jacksonville. Check out the streets and bridges of downtown during its heyday!

River City Marketplace is Jacksonville's only major shopping center north of the St. Johns River. It opened its doors on November 17, 2006. Major anchors include Wal-mart Supercenter, Lowes, Hollywood Theaters and Gander Mountain. Currently, the 879,001 square foot center has 69 stores. When built out, that number could increase to more than 100.
