APA Florida Conference In Jacksonville This Week
Jacksonville always seems to be moving forward, whether it is through reconstruction, redevelopment, or all together, creating something brand new. An important part of these processes though, is the vision and the planning that goes in to them. So why not get people together, right here, who love to talk about this sort of thing?
The American Planning Association (APA) is a non-profit organization of professionals, students, and allies who work on development and redevelopment of communities across the nation. The American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is the APA's professional branch. This professional institute Together, they organize and advance arts, sciences, and foster economic and social planning at the local, regional, state, and national level. APA has a chapter in Florida, known as APA Florida. APA Florida has over 2,500 members and 12 sections over the state. This makes APA Florida the second largest chapter in the nation. APA Florida works within both the public and private sectors, working on planning for transportation, land use, site planning, and design.
APA Florida’s annual conference is being held by the First Coast Section of APA Florida, and will take place in downtown Jacksonville, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Jacksonville is home to the four major pillars within the field of logistics, making it the perfect place to host the conference. Moreover, Jacksonville was the location of the first comprehensive city plan and zoning ordinance in Florida. This work was conducted by George Simons, Jr., a life member of the American Institute of Planners and the American Society of Planning Officials. The APA was formed when these two groups merged in 1978.
The APA conference will host several guest speakers this year. Among the guest speakers are Brent Toderian, Vancouver BC’s chief planner with over twenty years experience in urban core development, William Anderson, who has headed one of San Diego’s oldest planning groups and has partnered with AECOM, and Governor Ed Rendell. Other guest speakers include Mayor Alvin Brown, Lisa Rinaman, and Brian Taylor, the Chief Executive Officer for JAXPORT. Workshops included in this year’s conference include an emerging professions workshop, an exams preparations seminar, and a planning officials training seminar.
The conference will be statewide, and will work in conjunction with the Southeastern Planning Students Conference. Over fifteen student planning programs are to attend the conference, with over sixty different breakout sessions.
Aside from workshops and various conference tracks, attendees of the APA conference will also have the chance to experience all the culture Jacksonville has to offer. Attendees will have the chance to experience Wednesday ArtWalk, Food Truck Friday, Community First Saturday and the Riverside Arts Market. Attendees will also get to visit St. Augustine and Fernandina Beach.
The APA conference will take place September 3rd to the 6th.
