Restaurant Review: Maple Street Biscuit Company

Metro Jacksonville's Kristen Pickrell takes a visit to Jacksonville Beach's Maple Street Biscuit Company.
A few Saturdays ago, I found myself rolling out of bed early, and rolling down to the beach to look for breakfast. After passing all the familiar places on my way down A1A, I was pleased when my eye finally caught sight of something new-- The Maple Street Biscuit Company.

The Maple Street Biscuit Company is the result of a collective effort by owners Scott Moore, Gus Evans and Chris Sears. Originally, Maple Street opened a location in San Marco in November of 2012. After much success, the owners decided to open up the beachside location, in August of 2013.

“The concept is a casual atmosphere which is meant to be a community café,” said Scott Moore, one of the proud owners of Maple Street. “A key feature of the store is a community table which seats 14 guests. This allows guests to sit down and have a meal while getting to know their neighbors.”

The homegrown, community feel extends to the menu, too. “We developed the menu by having friends and neighbors over to my house every Thursday night,” said Moore, “to try our food and get their feedback.” The Maple Street Biscuit Company also features coffee that is local roasted and freshly ground on a daily basis.

Walking into the Maple Street Biscuit Company, I was suddenly overwhelmed by the delicious smell of freshly baked, buttery biscuits and sweet maple syrup. The place was hoping, but I was met with exceptionally fast and pleasant customer service. At the counter, they ask you a fun “question of the day,” and will call out your answer, along with your name, when the food is ready. The best part was that the restaurant is designed with an open kitchen, so you could even watch the chefs make the food while you waited.

The menu at Maple Street Biscuit Company is rather large, featuring items such as the “Squawking Goat,” which is a biscuit with a crunchy piece of fried chicken, a fried goat cheese medallion, and house made pepper jelly, “The Five,” which is a crispy piece of fried chicken, bacon, and cheese, all on top of a biscuit smothered in sausage gravy. Additional items on the menu include their “Smokey Mountain Mac-N-Cheese”, "Hash Ups" and “Sweet Potato Fries.”

I had one of their sweet, “Iced Cinnamon Pecan” biscuits. Despite the fact that the biscuit was covered in icing, the biscuit still remained flaky and buttery, with a nice crunch added by the pecans. Absolutely delicious. I also tried their apple butter, which was just as good, and their maple-style coffee, which was and interesting mix of both a bold and sugary flavor.

I would definitely check this place out. You can find the beach location at  410 3rd St N, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250, and the San Marco location at 2004 San Marco Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32207. The Maple Street Biscuit Company is opened Monday through Saturday, 7 AM to 2 PM.
