Ability Housing Expanding With Grant From Chase
Embroiled in controversy over plans to renovate a Springfield apartment complex to house homeless veterans, Ability Housing is expanding with support from a JPMorgan Chase & Co. grant.
Ability Housing of Northeast Florida, a nonprofit dedicated to permanent housing alternatives designed to help alleviate homelessness, is expanding into Orlando with support from a JPMorgan Chase & Co. grant. The nonprofit organization was started in Jacksonville more than 20 years ago and provides quality affordable rental housing for individuals and families who are either experiencing or at risk of homelessness and adults with a disability.
Orlando leaders and public-private partnerships have been investing in solutions to combat homelessness in their community; the addition of Ability Housing’s services will complement the effort with a model that has proven successful in Northeast Florida.
“We know how important it is to help more families and individuals have a place to call home and know this model can help reduce homelessness in our city”, said Mike Dosal, market leader for JPMorgan Chase in Central Florida.
Starting in January 2015, Ability Housing will begin its expansion into Orlando and surrounding communities by securing offices, researching properties to develop into affordable housing and seeking input from area stakeholders as to how it can best support the community’s efforts to reduce the number of persons experiencing homelessness.
“Central Florida has demonstrated true collaborations across multiple sectors to develop strategies to end homelessness in its community. Ability Housing is honored to be part of this collaborative effort and looks forward to working with the entire community to ensure every neighbor has a home. We are also very appreciative of JPMorgan Chase’s support and commitment to addressing community issues,” stated Shannon Nazworth, executive director of Ability Housing.
As it does in Jacksonville, Ability Housing plans to partner with local providers to implement best practices and work jointly to increase the availability of quality affordable rental housing in the area.
“Ability Housing’s track record of developing affordable, decent, supportive housing opportunities for some of the most disadvantaged community members is an example of what can work in our community and makes them a great partner. In order for there to be truly sustainable solutions to homelessness in our region we must support and encourage partnerships like the one we see developing with JPMorgan Chase and Ability Housing,” said Bakari F. Burns, President/CEO of Health Care Center for the Homeless, Inc.
JPMorgan Chase is committed to supporting organizations that promote financial stability and prosperity for families and communities around the globe. The work with Ability Housing is one of many of the firm’s public-private partnerships across the Florida.
In October, the banking firm announced it is funding an innovative study that will get a complete picture of homelessness in Florida and inform strategies to help prevent it. The work is being led by Barbara Poppe, former executive director of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, and a national authority on the subject, in collaboration with The Central Florida Commission on Homelessness.
