San Jose Boulevard Gets Bike Lanes
In 2010, the passage of Jacksonville's 2030 Mobility Plan called for the City of Jacksonville to invest $36 million to fund over 100 miles of new bicycle facilities throughout the city. The addition of bike lanes to San Jose Boulevard was a major item on the proposed improvements list. Well, we can remove a good chunk of it from the list. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 2 recently added them as a part of a $4.5 million roadway resurfacing project. Take a look.

The State Road 13/San Jose Boulevard roadway resurfacing project stretches for 4.7 miles from Sunbeam Road to Cornell Road, with a construction cost of approximately $4.5 million. Work began around the first of the year (2014), and is now nearing completion.
There are six lanes between Sunbeam Road and Baymeadows Road in Mandarin, where the Average Annual Daily Traffic (AADT) count is 47,000 vehicles. North of Baymeadows, where the AADT drops to 27,500, roadway lanes have been narrowed to accommodate bike lanes and parallel parking.
This project is a great example of how we can take advantage of routine roadway maintenance projects to fund safety improvements and multi-modal makeovers of existing streets without the costly expense of widening them.
