Review: The Fish Company Restaurant Oyster Bar

Metro Jacksonville's Emma Cole review of Atlantic Beach's The Fish Company Restaurant Oyster Bar.
From their “Fried Seafood Platters” to an array of local fish favorites, there’s something on the menu for any seafood lover at this Atlantic Beach seafood hub. Owned by the husband and wife team of Ann and Bill Pinner, their hard work, passion, and restaurant experience has made their “vision of a first class seafood restaurant with a casual beach attitude” a reality since the opening of “The Fish Company Restaurant Oyster Bar” in 2006.

A friend and I made a recent trip to “The Fish Company” on a Thursday night, and were happy to discover a $2 house wine drink special upon arrival. We started off our sumptuous seafood meal with the seared sea scallops as an appetizer. Seared to perfection, the scallops were served over a vegetable medley that even my companion, a picky eater who typically avoids veggies, enjoyed. The scallops were pleasantly plump, tender, and absolutely delectable. The vegetable medley consisted of crisp, superbly cooked green beans, along with roasted red onions, tomatoes and carrots that packed a flavorful punch. Needless to say, we left the plate sparkling clean.

For an entrée, I treated myself to the lobster tail. The lobster itself had mild, yet distinct flavor, and was accompanied by a side of melted butter. For one of my two sides, I received a hearty portion of steamed broccoli, which comes with a tasty cheese sauce. For the other side option, I chose cheese grits, a personal favorite, and received a true taste of the south with their delicious creaminess and flavor. My plate was rounded off with a couple of hush puppies, made with a savory cornmeal batter.

My friend ordered the grilled grouper sandwich. He described it as “perfectly cooked,” and praised the bread roll it was served on. The fresh grouper catch was expertly seasoned and seared, and served with crinkle fries (yum!). We indulged in a warm fudge brownie sundae for desert, and it was lavishly presented with pecans, whipped cream, and a cherry on top- a heavenly end to a scrumptious feast.

“The Fish Company” purchases local fish daily, giving them a great reputation for consistent, year-round freshness. Local fish dishes to look out for this time of year include: Sheepshead, Trigger Fish, Wahoo and Cobia. Also, the 2014 crawfish season is upon us, something the restaurant has been very excited about. Saturday features a special of buy one order of snow crab, and two beverages, and get the second order of snow crab free; a fantastic deal for date night! The Raw Bar in the center of the restaurant is a great place to find yourself on a Tuesday or Wednesday, which feature a dozen oysters, raw or steamed, for $5.99. “The Fish Company” is a spot I recommend to anyone looking to experience some of the freshest, seasonal seafood Jax has to offer. If you haven’t been, it’s time to go!
