Lisa Kaminski is a swimsuit designer and will be presenting at Jacksonville Fashion Week 2013. She answers our questions about her work, process and goals.
Why? (existential. answer any way you want)
I love the process: to see my designs go from sketch to creation and finally worn by other swimwear aficionados!
Who are you designing for?
My goal is to create designs that are effortlessly elegant and sexy. I think the wordeffortless is very important. I think that that creates an ease and a confidence, because I think there's nothing more beautiful than a woman who's confident.
What fabrics do you like to use?
When designing my swimwear -I love stretch fabrics (Spandex and Nylon) of course! And my new 2013 resortwear includes beach and maxi dresses - I love luxury Italian jersey knits because they fit the body amazingly and are perfect travel dresses since they do not wrinkle.
What do you want to say with your style?
Expect the unexpected! My goal is for every design to include a unique element: unusual fabrics, reclaimed hardware, bead accents, vintage pins... I like to create Wearable Art.
Which designers are you inspired by?
Diane Von Furstenberg, Catalina Alvarez and Mariana Hinestroza of Agua Bendita, Naomi Newirth and Lyndi Irons of Acacia Swimwear. Also, The 1950's. The bikini was born in 1946! I'm so inspired by hollywood glamour icons such as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, and Sophia Loren. My design dream era!
Where are you at in your career?
I love my life! I've never worked harder or been busier! I'm living my dream!
What are your goals?
I'm very excited about my future! My goals are to expand my brand Internationally and to have one of my swimsuits in the Sports Illustrated Swimwear issue 2014!
What do you want Jacksonville to know about you?
My passion for swimwear started very early, growing up on the beaches in Jacksonville, Florida. I designed and created my first swimsuit at age 15. I'm looking forward to showingmy 2013 collection at Jacksonville Fashion Week and being surrounded by the amazing local talent (SO many artists and emerging designers!!) and to be energized by that fabulous creative vibe!
