What is TEDxJacksonville?

Last year, Jacksonville joined a special league of cities by hosting their first TEDx events . The all volunteer team at TEDxJacksonville is now on their 2nd year and are doing an incredible job bringing attention to Jacksonville's idea leaders.
We're happy to announce our partnership with and sponsorship of TEDxJacksonville 2013. The all volunteer team at TEDxJacksonville is working incredibly hard to pull their events together, for the 2nd time! Last year's events were a major success for the community. The events were sold out but more importantly, as a result of their efforts, we all became a bit smarter as we gleaned knowledge and insight from Jacksonville's intelligentsia.

MetroJacksonville.com has always believed that bringing attention and accolades to our local thinkers, innovators and creatives is one of the best ways to develop and celebrate our unique Jacksonville culture. Our city is filled with revolutionary, thought-provoking people and TEDxJacksonville is a perfect conduit to highlight at least some of the people who are making our city special.

Over the next few months the TEDxJacksonville team will be providing MetroJacksonville.com with information about their event and the people connected to it. We'll be posting their commentary to the front page on a weekly basis. Their team is completely open to dialoguing as they want to provide MetroJacksonville.com as much behind the scenes insight as they can.

We're excited to be working with this group of bright and motivated individuals on the TEDxJacksonville project.

We are often asked ‘What is TEDxJacksonville’. The easy answer is that TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. We’d like to think of it as a small piece of a TED revolution that is afoot around the globe and in every corner of the world.

TED started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, and Design. Since then, its scope has become ever broader. TED’s passionate belief in the power of ideas to change the world helped create the TEDx program in 2009, giving communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue at the local level. TEDx events, like TEDxJacksonville, are planned and coordinated independently of TED.

After hosting a highly successful conference as TEDxRiversideAvondale in 2012, we applied for a more expansive city-wide license. Thus was born TEDxJacksonville.

Our team of volunteers has embraced the challenge of bringing the TEDx experience to Jacksonville because we believe our city’s greatest assets are the ideas and dreams of its citizenry. Ideas have the power to reshape minds and change the way people act. But, too often, ideas are deferred and unheard because they lack a platform that gives them voice. We want TEDxJacksonville to be that platform.

The stats of what this platform can achieve on the global scale are staggering. Jacksonville is one of 1,500 cities that host TEDx events. Last year, our team hosted just one of the 4,916 TEDx events organized around the world. Every talk filmed at a TEDx event is placed on the TEDxTalks channel on YouTube. This makes our presenters part of a channel that has received over 54 million views. We’re part of something global and we want you to join us.

Our team hosts three types of events: simulcasts, salons, and an annual TEDxJacksonville conference. A simulcast of TED conference is just that - a live transmission of the TED conference. Each year, TED hosts four conferences year round – TEDWomen, TEDGlobal, TEDActive, and TED. As the TED conference unfolds in cities like San Francisco, Whistler, Vancouver or Rio de Janeiro, Jacksonville has the opportunity to watch, engage with and build on the TED conference experience live from the comfort of their city via our simulcast events. TEDx salons are inspiring gatherings where our attendees can watch prerecorded TED Talks, meet our team, and engage in a dialogue about the future of Jacksonville.

All year round, as we host these events, we are constantly working toward our annual conference, TEDxJacksonville on October 26th. This year’s event will feature 11 live speakers, excellent food and the opportunity to interact with 300 like-minded individuals.

Stay tuned here for more on what we hope to bring on October 26th. In the meantime, if you’d like to get to know us better, come join us at our next event TEDxJacksonville Salon at the Musuem of Science and History.

See you soon,
