Sci-Fi Day at MOSH

MOSH brings the community Sci-Fi Day, Saturday, June 23rd. Sci-Fi Day's exhibitions and presenters will celebrate the pioneers of the past, discuss the intrigue of the future and explain the ideas developed within the genre that could one day become scientific, technological fact. Join MOSH with Storm Troopers, Starfleet officers, Klingons, and droids at this galactic event (and 'May the Force be With You.').

Since its creation, science fiction stories have sparked the imaginations of people of all ages.  Science fiction has often been the inspiration for many to study science, mathematics and engineering.  And what was once considered science fiction has become today’s science fact.  MOSH’s Sci-Fi Day celebrates the genre of Sci-Fi through popular film, literature, television and pop culture. The event will take place on June 23 and activities will run throughout the day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All activities are included with museum admission.

Storm Troopers, Starfleet officers, Klingons, droids and more will be available for photos and autographs throughout the day.  The Jacksonville Public Library will feature Sci-Fi reading lists and Steampunk crafts for kids.  Memorabilia from sci-fi franchises, including a life-size Tardis from Dr. Who and Captain Kirk’s chair from Star Trek will also be on display.  Other program partners include the 501st Garrison, Rebel Legion, Starfleet International Jacksonville and Orlando, International Plastic Model Builders Association and Project Farragut. Planetarium shows presented that day will be narrated by characters from popular science fiction movies.

In addition, there will be three special presentations in the planetarium:

· 11 am: Science Fiction or Science Fact, Dr. Mike Reynolds, Dean of Liberal Arts at Florida State College at Jacksonville

·1 pm: The Physics of Light Speed and Warp Drive, Tom Webber, Bryan-Gooding Planetarium Director

· 2 pm: Science Fiction and the Night Sky, Brett Jacobs, Bryan-Gooding Planetarium Senior Educator
