Cultural Council: Professional Development for Artists
Jacksonville's artists are often unsure how to actually make a living from their work. They have spent so much of their time expanding/refining their skills that they overlook the 'business' side of their craft. The Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville in partnership with Creative Capital Foundation are presenting two different workshops that specifically focus on professional development.
The Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville in partnership with the Creative Capital Foundation will present two professional development workshops for artists, “Real Community Engagement” (September 29) and “Funding Your Work” (September 30). Northeast Florida artists working in all disciplines are eligible to apply. The workshops will be held at the Florida Times-Union Conference Room, 1 Riverside Avenue, and will be offered free of charge.
Interested artists should complete the application located on the Cultural Council website: www.culturalcouncil.org by September 4, 2012. Artists working in a variety disciplines are eligible to apply including visual artists, musicians, writers, actors, photographers, filmmakers and more.
Founded in 1999, the Creative Capital Foundation is a national non-profit artist support organization based in New York City. Since 2003, the Creative Capital Foundation has partnered with arts stakeholders to develop and present professional development workshops for hundreds of artists around the country.
Two separate workshops will be presented. Artists are eligible to apply for either one, or both. All artists are encouraged to apply, including those in rural communities and minority artists.
Real Community Engagement will be held on Saturday, September 29 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Artists of all disciplines are choosing to collaborate with institutions and individuals outside the traditional art community to create work that engages topics of social relevance. This workshop is designed to help artists clarify their objectives and gain management skills needed to produce successful community engagement projects. Case studies from a range of disciplines are used to discuss grassroots fundraising, budgeting, negotiation, contracts, communicating about work, working with non-arts partners, and more.
Funding Your Work will be held on Sunday, September 30 from 12 noon – 4 p.m., and is based on content from Creative Capital’s esteemed core weekend workshop. It combines nuts-and-bolts strategies with a broad-based approach towards how to integrate fundraising into creative practice. Topics include developing fundraising materials; working with venues, donors and funders; building an individual donor base; and real cost budgeting.
Professional artists of all artistic disciplines residing in Northeast Florida are eligible to apply to participate. For the purposes of this opportunity, a professional artist is defined as an individual who creates, on an ongoing basis, original works of art within an artistic discipline, and is pursuing this work as a means of livelihood or a way to achieve the highest level of professional recognition.
