Laura Street: Before and After
A look before and after the completion of the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission's $2.7 million Laura Street Streetscape project.
The JEDC's Laura Street project included converting four blocks of the corridor to two-way traffic, and adding new pedestrian pavement, as well as lighting, landscaping and hardscaping.
This project is the outgrowth of several ideas that included Metro Jacksonville's 2006 Lighting Laura Street plan (https://www.metrojacksonville.com/article/2006-may-updated-laura-street-lighting-and-parking-plan). The basic purpose of the plan was to use simple, affordable ideas and short term solutions to address several issues hampering end user walkability, retail growth and the general image of downtown.
Lighting Laura Street was presented to former Councilwoman Suzanne Jenkin's 2006 Downtown Action Plan Committee and incorporated into the JEDC's 2007 19-point initiative called the Downtown Action Plan (https://www.metrojacksonville.com/article/2009-feb-jacksonvilles-downtown-action-plan).
This project is proof the grassroots efforts of groups like Metro Jacksonville can have a positive impact on the development of built infrastructure in the City of Jacksonville.
