A Different Jacksonville

As 2011 comes to a close, we revisit sights and scenes of downtown Jacksonville, taken a century ago.

1. Bay Street, looking west towards Main Street.  The six-story Dyal-Upchurch building can be seen on the left.



2. Main Street, looking north towards Springfield, between Confederate and Waterworks Parks.



3. The U.S. Post Office building at the intersection of Forsyth and Hogan Streets.



4. Forsyth at Laura Street.  The Mercantile Exchange Bank eventually was expanded and is now known as the Laura Trio's Marble Bank.




5. The same Forsyth Street scene a few years later.



6. Hemming Plaza.  The St. James Hotel in the background is now the site of the federal courthouse.



7. The intersection of Bay and Main Streets.  The entire block on the left is now the Wells Fargo Center.



8. Residences along West Church Street.



9. First Baptist Church at the intersection of Hogan and Church Streets.



10.Waterworks Park near Main Street and Hogans Creek.



11. Riverside Park.



12. The Duval Hotel at Forsyth and Hogan Streets.  This site is now occupied by a FedEx store.


13. A Steamer docking in downtown Jacksonville.



14. Hemming Park.
