Amtrak on the Florida East Coast Moving Forward

Metro Jacksonville takes a look at proposed FEC/Amtrak corridor station renderings. Unfortunately the Jacksonville Terminal didn't make this list.
Corridor Coalition Update

The month of August was a month of celebration for Amtrak/FEC project supporters. As you may recall from earlier emails, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) submitted a Federal funding application for the Amtrak/FEC Corridor Project on August 6, 2010.  Funding awards for the “High Speed/Intercity Passenger Rail” program are expected to be announced by the Federal Railroad Administration later this fall.

During this past summer, 34 public hearings and workshops were held along Florida's east coast to identify preferred station locations and develop station concepts in each of the eight “station cities.”  The attached Corridor Coalition update includes station concept drawings and plans for each of the eight preferred station locations.  This document, along with other Corridor Coalition updates and other project-related information, is also posted on our website at www.tcrpc.org.

The Amtrak/FEC Corridor Project received an outpouring of public support throughout the summer of 2010, with hundreds of project advocates and others participating in the public forums and communicating with elected officials locally, in Tallahassee, and Washington, DC.  The FDOT funding application included 160 letters and resolutions of support from local governments and organizations as well as more than a dozen individual letters from key elected officials, including Florida's Governor and members of Florida’s Congressional and Legislative delegations.  Continued dialogue with Florida's elected leaders will help emphasize the importance of this project to Florida's visitors, business owners and residents.

We look forward to sharing project information with you as the Amtrak/FEC Corridor Project continues to move forward.
