JACKSONVILLE, Fla. April 30, 2010 – In celebration of National Preservation Month, the Jacksonville Historic Preservation Commission will honor 17 projects and services at their annual awards ceremony.

WHAT:
National Preservation Month was created by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to spotlight grassroots preservation efforts around the country. Communities take this time to celebrate historic preservation activities in order to create greater public awareness, understanding and appreciation of efforts to preserve local historic resources and heritage.
This annual awards ceremony recognizes outstanding projects and services that promote historic preservation in the Greater Jacksonville Area. Award categories include: Heritage Education and Publications, Residential and Commercial Rehabilitation, and Preservation Projects and Services.
The awards will be presented by the Historic Preservation Commissioners with the chairman, Joseph Thompson, acting as the master of ceremony. Some of the projects and people receiving awards include:
- The rehabilitation of the Haverty's Building/ Jake M. Godbold City Hall Annex
- MetroJacksonville.com for their coverage of local history and urban neighborhoods
- A video on the History of Riverside Avondale
- A historic marker program for Arlington and Durkeeville
- Bill Cesery for his compatible new construction at 3rd and Main in Springfield
- A World War II Oral History Project by the Jacksonville Historical Society and West Rotary of Jacksonville
- A History of Florida: The Old St. Nicolas Cemetery by Kay Ellen Gilmour, M.D.
- Two books on the gardens at The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens Thunder on the River: The Civil War in Northeast Florida by Daniel L. Schafer, Ph.D.
- Overall preservation service awards for historian Edward A. Mueller and architect Robert Broward.
Among the individuals being honored are Council Members Michael Corrigan and Warren Jones for their contributions toward the preservation of the Lake Shore Subdivision Gates.
