Changing the Urban Landscape in 2010

2009 may have been a year to forget as far as downtown is concerned. Looking forward to 2010, here are five projects that have the potential to stimulate additional life in downtown.
1. Duval County Courthouse

Finally under construction, the Duval County Courthouse will be interesting to watch in 2010. Will it be able to stimulate additional redevelopment in LaVilla?

3. Laura Street Streetscape

Built off a streetscape improvement plan heavily advocated by Metro Jacksonville in 2006, the $2.7 million Laura Street Streetscape project will visually and physically enhance the heart of the downtown core and form a strong pedestrian link between the Landing/riverfront and Hemming Plaza.

4. 200 Riverside

Scheduled to break ground in 2010, Hallmark Partner's 200 Riverside could transform a blighted section of Brooklyn into a Downtown gateway anchor.

5. JTA Bus Rapid Transit

As a part of the BRT project, Broad Street will recieve a makeover and could include bike lanes, improved sidewalks and lighting.

This one may be suprising to those who have followed Metro Jacksonville since the beginning. However, JTA's Downtown BRT project has the potential to visually enhance and improve pedestrian walkability along Riverplace Blvd, Jefferson, Bay, Broad and Forsyth Streets. The potential for improved lighting, landscaping, sidewalks, bus stops and bike lanes along five major downtown streets that lack these amenities gets the BRT project added to the list.
