For months, it has been rumored that Mike Weinstein would challenge Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton for the top spot in city hall. Those rumors will end Thursday afternoon when Weinstein opens his campaign account at the supervisor of elections office.  He becomes the fourth candidate to declare his intent to run for mayor – Peyton, a Republican and Democrats Diane Melendez and Jackie Brown have already declared for the April 2007 election.

Weinstein, a Republican, will challenge Peyton for the second time in as many elections – he finished just one percent behind Peyton in the 2003 campaign.  He and Peyton have another thing in common: they both accumulated over $1 million in campaign contributions during the 2003 election.

Weinstein has also begun to assemble a campaign team: he has announced that Susan Sulzbacher will serve as the campaign’s finance chair.
